VBScript Error Message Browsing with Internet Explorer 5 in ISM (HTML)

ID: Q239543

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server, Enterprise Edition version 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 Option Pack

SYMPTOMS

When you have Internet Explorer 5 and Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack installed on a computer running Windows NT 4.0, you may not be able to view a Web site's configuration information from the Internet Service Manager (HTML) utility for remote Internet Information Server (IIS) administration. The following error message may appear when you attempt to use the Browse command to specify a folder location on the default Web site's Web Site page, Home Directory page, or Documents page:

Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: '[String: "IE"]'
/iisadmin/JSBrowser/JSBrwLs.asp, line 9
To get to these default Web site pages from a newly opened Internet Service Manager (HTML) window, click Default Web Site in the right panel, and then click Properties in the left panel. Then, click Web Site, Home Directory, or Documents in the left panel to open the appropriate page.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the new scripting engines installed with Internet Explorer 5 interfere with the browsing function in Internet Service Manager (HTML). Internet Explorer 5 operates with VBScript instead of Java, which is used with Internet Explorer 4.x.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q152734 How to Obtain the Latest Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (or later) must be installed on your Windows NT 4.0 server before installing Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

If the Internet Service Manager (HTML) shortcut is not displayed in the Microsoft Internet Information Server group on the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack menu on your desktop:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, and then click Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Setup.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove, double-click Internet Information Server (IIS), and then click to select the Internet Service Manager (HTML) check box.

  3. Complete the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack Setup procedure. When the Setup process is finished, the Internet Service Manager (HTML) shortcut is displayed appropriately.

For more information about remote administration with Internet Service Manager (HTML), please see the Release Notes included with Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
