SYMPTOMS

When you use the Internet Service Manager (ISM) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, and you click a site in the MMC, the following error message may occur:

The RPC Server is unavailable.

CAUSE

This error message occurs if the IIS Admin service is stopped and you attempt to use the Internet Service Manager (ISM) MMC snap-in. You must start the IIS Admin service before using the Internet Service Manager (ISM) MMC snap-in.

RESOLUTION

After you receive the error message, the IIS Admin service should restart automatically. When you close and re-open the Internet Service Manager (ISM) MMC snap-in, Internet Service Manager should work as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in IIS 4.0 and 5.0.
