Proxy DOD Dials for All IPX WSP Requests Even if Target is in LAT

SYMPTOMS

You can use Microsoft Proxy Server to dial out to the Internet when a client requests a page from the Internet. However, the Dial on Demand (DOD) function will not dial out if the page requested is in the cache of the Proxy Server. In addition, when the client is connecting to the server via IPX, DOD always dials out even if the page is in the cache or is a local page on the internal network.

WORKAROUND

In order to work around this issue, you can add the following registry entry that will keep the server from dialing if the web page is in the cache.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved.

Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Make a backup of your registry before attempting to make registry changes

1. Open the Registry Editor.



2. Find the following key:

   
      Hkey_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/WSPSRV/Parameters 




3. Select Edit and click Add Value.



4. Type the following:

   
      SelectiveDialOnDemand 




5. Set the Data Type to DWORD. Click OK.



6. Set the Data value to any non-zero value. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Proxy Server version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
