Access Denied Error Message with IE 4.0 FTP Through Proxy to Secure FTP Site

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) version 4.0 to FTP to a secure FTP server through the Proxy Server with Microsoft Windows NT Server Challenge/Response (NTLM) selected (enabled), you may get the following error message:

Access Denied


CAUSE

A problem exists with the NTLM in Internet Explorer 4.0.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT service pack that contains this fix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Winsock Proxy service for FTP requests, or use a custom security setting in Internet Explorer. Under User Authentication, select Prompt for Username and Password.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 and 4.01.
