Proxy Error: Packet Filtering Cannot Be Enabled On This Server...

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you administer Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0, you may receive the following error message:

Packet filtering cannot be enabled on this server because it does not
have an external network interface.


CAUSE

The IP addresses of both the internal and external network cards on the Proxy Server are in the Local Address Table.


RESOLUTION

Remove the external Network Interface Card (the one that is connected to Internet) from the Local Address Table by performing the following steps:

  1. Open the Internet Service Manager.


  2. Double click one of the Proxy Services for properties.


  3. Click the Services tab.


  4. Click the Local Address Table button.


  5. Highlight the address range to be removed and click Remove.


  6. Click OK.


  7. Stop and restart all Proxy services to reload the Local Address Table.


NOTE: Change needs to occur in only one of the Proxy services. The same Local Address Table is used by all services. However, each service needs to be stopped and restarted to have the change take effect.
