-
Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0
SUMMARY
To correctly set up Proxy Server 2.0, follow the steps listed in the MORE INFORMATION section below.
MORE INFORMATION- Install two network interfaces.
NOTE: It is recommended that Proxy Server have at least two network
interfaces: one "internal" and one "external." The internal interface
must be a network interface card (NIC). The external network interface
can either be another NIC, or a standard, ISDN, or cable modem. If the
Proxy Server is only configured with just one network interface, it
can only be used as a "caching only" server.
- Set up the external interface with the proper IP address
information.
NOTE: The external network interface must have the proper IP address
information. This will depend on the type of external network interface
used. If the external network interface is a NIC, it must be configured
with both a valid Internet IP address and a valid IP address for an
Internet DNS server. If the external network interface is a modem, a
Dial-Up Network phonebook entry must be configured to connect to your
ISP. The phonebook entry must contain the proper DNS server
information.
- Set up the internal NIC with a valid internal IP address and its
proper
subnet mask, but do not specify a default gateway.
CAUTION: A route to your internal network can be created if a default
gateway is defined.
- Disable IP forwarding.
CAUTION: To provide a secure network environment, IP packet routing
must be controlled. If IP forwarding is enabled, all packets will
automatically be forwarded across both internal and external networks.
- Build the Local Address Table (LAT) so that it uses the IP range of
the
internal NIC.
NOTE: Only include the internal IP addresses in the LAT. This should
also include the internal IP address on the Proxy Server.
Proxy Server uses the LAT to determine which requests to answer. In
addition, Proxy Server uses the LAT to determine which interface to use
when sending requests out to the external network. If all IP addresses
on the Proxy Server are included in the LAT, Proxy Server will only
be useful as a caching server. If none of the IP addresses on the Proxy
Server are included in the LAT, no requests will be answered by the
Proxy Server.
