Err Msg: The Value in the Proxy Edit Box Is Not a Valid Computer Name

ID: Q218742

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you configure the Proxy Server settings in the "Client Configuration" Web or Winsock properties, the following error message may occur:

The value in the proxy edit box is not a valid computer name

CAUSE

This occurs when you configure the Winsock client setup under "Client Configuration" in Web or Winsock properties to use anything but a NetBIOS name for the computer name, and when the "Automatically configure Web browser during client setup" entry does not match the computer name.

Even if you select IP Address or Manual, and "Automatically configure Web browser during client setup" is not enabled, the error will still appear.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, edit the computer name and "Automatically configure Web browser during client setup" option so they match. Do this even if you have already selected IP Address or Manual.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Proxy Server 2.0.
