Issues with Microsoft Proxy 2.0 and the Internet Information Server 4.0 Default Web Site

ID: Q246101

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 2.0

SUMMARY

Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 implements the Web Proxy service using an Internet Server API (ISAPI) filter that loads under the context of the default Web site.

MORE INFORMATION

If you run Proxy Server on Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0, the filter is sensitive to the following configuration criteria:

  • You should not rename the default Web site.

  • You should set the default Web site to the "All Unassigned" IP address.

  • You should not configure any host headers for the default Web site.

NOTE: This criteria does not apply to IIS 3.0 because IIS 3.0 does not embrace the concept of separate Web sites (the ISAPI filter is loaded for the entire Web service).

Although the default TCP port for the default Web site is 80, the port can be changed. If you change the port, you need to change the HTTP proxy settings of any browsers configured to use the proxy to reflect the new port.

Many programs rely on the existence of the default Web site. If you rename the default Web site to another name, the ISAPI filters and other programs may not install properly on an IIS 4.0 server. You should create a new site if you want to publish Web content from an IIS 4.0 server that is also running Proxy Server.
