Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a
SUMMARY
This article outlines the Small Business Server Service Pack and the steps
needed to upgrade a Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server from version
4.0 to version 4.0a. Please refer to the release notes in the Readme.txt
file on the first compact disc for further information. These release notes
are also available in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base:
Q180109 Small Business Server 4.0a Readme.wri File
The Small Business Server 4.0a Service Pack consists of three CDs: one for
x86 systems, one for Alpha systems, and a Client CD. The installation
process replaces the Console files in their entirety and updates the
applications to work properly with the 4.0a Console. Because the entire
Console was modified to support Internet Explorer 4.01, many changes were
made that require the service pack to be shipped on multiple CDs. The
service pack does not contain Windows NT Server and, therefore, the service
pack will not install the full Small Business Server product. If the server
needs to be rebuilt for any reason, the original CDs must be used to
install Small Business Server and the 4.0a Service Pack CDs must then be
applied by running the setup program, Sbssetup.exe, to update the server.
Steps To Upgrade To Service Pack 4.0a
NOTE: Back up critical information (the entire system if possible), using
an available storage medium.
- Log off all users connected to the server, and close all open programs.
- Insert the compact disc labeled Disk 1 from the service pack.
- From the Desktop, click Start, and then click Run.
- Type the following command in the Run dialog box
<CD Drive:>\SBSSetup.exe
where <CD Drive:> is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive on the
server.
- Proceed with the setup process and restart the computer when prompted to
do so.
Upgrading the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server Workstations
Repeat the following steps for each workstation computer you want to
update:
- From the Desktop, click Start, and then click Manage Server.
- After the Manage Server console appears, click the More Task tab, and
then click the Manage Computers link.
- In the Manage Computers page, click the Add Software to a Computer link.
- Select the primary user of the workstation that is being upgraded from
the list of users that appears, and then click Next.
- Select the name of the workstation that you want to upgrade, and then
click Next.
- Select the appropriate applications that you want to upgrade or install,
and then click Next.
- Complete the wizard by clicking Next. A setup script will be created on
the workstation. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
- When the primary user of the workstation logs on again, the Setup Client
Wizard will automatically start. The user should click Next to start the
wizard, and then click Next again to start upgrading or installing the
client applications. When the upgrade is complete, click Finish and
restart the workstation as prompted.
MORE INFORMATION
The following are key SBS 4.0a changes and fixes:
- Internet Explorer is installed by default on the server. Changes were
made to the administration console's HTML so that it will work with
Internet Explorer 4.01.
In SBS 4.0, the Setup Computer Wizard (automated client installation
process), installed Internet Explorer 3.02. For SBS 4.0a, Internet
Explorer 4.01 is installed by default on new clients and can be
installed on existing clients. No option is given to install Internet
Explorer 3.02 because it may overwrite the existing 4.01 files.
- Client memory requirements have been raised to 12 MB RAM (from 8 MB) for
Windows 95, 24 MB for Windows NT, and 96 MB free hard disk drive space.
This is the RAM requirement for a client to run Internet Explorer 4.01.
- Service Pack 3 is required for Windows NT clients. This is in the
release notes. Both modem sharing and Internet Explorer 4.01 require
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 on the client.
- Internet Mail/News problems were fixed. Internet Mail and News did not
work, by default, in SBS 4.0. The proxy exclusion list had to be
manually modified to include Explorer. This was fixed in SBS 4.0a and
now clients are automatically configured so that they can use Mail/News.
- Administration Console script bugs have been fixed. There are some
random occurrences where the HTML administration console will stop
responding (hang) or give a script error. These have been fixed.
- 800 KB limit on e-mail message size. In SBS 4.0, if the user sends a
piece of mail that is greater than 800 KB, he or she is returned a
confusing message from Microsoft Exchange Server. This has been fixed.
The maximum e-mail message size has been limited to 800 KB on the
Exchange Server computer. The user will get a coherent error message
from the Exchange Server computer. The maximum message size exists
because of the tuning that was done to Exchange Server. Exchange Server
runs in a memory footprint of about 8 megabytes. If this maximum message
limit needs to be increased, the Exchange Server optimizer can be run to
change the maximum message size. This is not recommended without a
thorough knowledge of Exchange Server.
- Bumppack bugs have been fixed. There were two bugs found in the Client
License Add Pack Disks. One occurred when the bumppack would not install
if the disk had been write protected. This has been flagged with a new
error message that indicates the disk write protect tab is enabled and
to disable it. The other occurred when the Temp environment variable on
the Windows NT Server computer pointed to a folder that did not exist.
Both of these have been fixed.
- Fax Client removal fails. Removal of the Fax Client on Windows 95 failed
with an error when using the Uninstall option. This has been fixed.
