Small Business Server Client Applications Cannot Be Installed over a Modem

ID: Q183234

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

When you set up a Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server network, it is not possible to install the client applications onto the client systems over a Remote Access Service (RAS) dial-up connection.

CAUSE

The client applications were designed to be installed over a local area network (LAN) connection. If all applications are installed, they need approximately 90 MB of disk space. An installation of this size takes a considerably long time over a modem and there is a possibility of the telephone line dropping the call during the installation.

RESOLUTION

Connect the client computers to the Small Business Server computer by using a network card or use the Small Business Server Client compact disc to install the applications. All applications are located on the Client compact disc in the \MS folder under their associated names and can be installed by running the setup program for the application and platform desired (x86, Windows 95, and so forth).

STATUS

This limitation is by design.
