SBS Fax Server Receive Properties May Not Be Saved

Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if

SYMPTOMS
After you select any or all of the receive options in the Small Business
Server (SBS) Fax Server Receive properties, the changes may not be saved in
the User Interface (UI) dialog box; however, they are retained in the
registry. The following selections are affected:
Print to: <printer name>
Save in folder: <path>
Send to local inbox: Profile Name <Default or Administrator>
CAUSE
This symptom can be caused when two modems are installed and then one of
the modems is removed. The line ID of the fax device determines how the fax
settings are stored. If the modem with the lowest line ID is removed, the
Fax Server settings are not saved in the UI.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use one of the following procedures:
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and
Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" online Help
topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before
you edit it.
Method 1
Set the properties manually using the following steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-
click Services.
- Stop the Microsoft Fax Service.
- Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe)
- Go to the following key and set the properties manually:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fax\Devices\<########>\Routing
where <########> is a line ID device key such as 00151784
NOTE: The appropriate modem can be identified by comparing the
description of the modem on the Fax Server Receive properties and the
following registry entry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fax\Devices\<########>\Routing
Values for the registry entries are:
GUI Registry Value Value Setting
--- -------------- -------------
Send to Local InBox Mask 0x3 = Not Selected
0x7 = Selected
Profile Name Profile Name <email name>
Save In Folder Store Directory <drive:\directory>
- Start the Microsoft Fax Service.
Method 2
Delete the line ID device key of the modem that no longer exists using the
following steps:
- Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Go to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fax\Devices\<########>
where <########> is a line ID device key such as 00151784
- Check the Device Name value to determine which line ID (or registry key)
matches the modem that no longer exists.
- Select the registry key (or line ID) that references the modem that is
no longer installed and then delete that key.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-
click Services.
- Stop the Microsoft Fax service then re-start it.
Method 3
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-
click Services and stop the Microsoft Fax server service.
- Run Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Go to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fax\Devices\<########>
where <########> is a line ID device number such as 00151784
- Delete all of these ######## (registry) keys.
- Close the registry editor and then go to control panel services and
restart the Microsoft Fax Server Service.
- Open regedt32 and go to the above key and notice that the Devices key
now lists all the correct ######## keys.
NOTE:
One Other Method
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, click Add/Remove
programs, and remove the Microsoft Fax Server Service.
- Restart SBS and reinstall the FAX Server Service from the Small
Business Server compact disc number two.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Small Business Server
version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post additional
information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
MORE INFORMATION
To determine the line ID of a fax device, go to the following registry
location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Fax\Devices\<########>
where <########> is the 8 digit line ID decimal key (converted from the
hexadecimal number of the value Permanent Lineid).
For example, when two modems are installed, the device line IDs may be
00172135 and 00193795. If the modem with ID 00172135 is removed, this
symptom will occur. If the modem with the higher ID is removed, it will not
impact the other modem's settings.
