Unable to Create a Shared Folder

ID: Q189087

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

The following error message is received when creating a new user with the Add a New User wizard in Manage Server:

Unable to create a shared folder for username.
When you click OK, the following error message is displayed:
The Wizard successfully created a user account for user_fullname with the username username.

CAUSE

These messages are received if the permissions, share and/or directory, are not set properly on the Users Shared Folders directory.

MORE INFORMATION

The share name for Users Shared Folders should be "users". The share permissions should be set to Everyone with Full Control. The directory permissions should be as follows:

   Administrators Full Control (All)(All)
   CREATOR OWNER Full Control (All)(All)
   Domain Admins Full Control (All)(All)
   Domain Users Read (RX)(RX)
   Server Operators Change (RWXD)(RWXD)
   SYSTEM Full Control (All)(All)

If the directory has been moved or renamed, the user's shared folder will not be created. It may also be necessary to stop sharing on the directory, and then set up the share properly.

You will need to restart the computer before the changes will take effect.
