How to Install Small Business Server on 2-GB+ Partitions

ID: Q190819

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a

SUMMARY

To install, BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) requires a formatted disk partition larger than 1.3 GB. The largest FAT partition that can be created with Fdisk is 2 GB. Use the following method to install SBS on a partition larger than 2 GB.

  1. Boot from an MS-DOS 6.22 floppy disk.

  2. Use Fdisk.exe to create a partition smaller than 1.3 GB. Make sure no other formatted partitions exist with 1.3 GB of free space or more.

  3. Boot from the three disk that come with SBS.

Setup will search all existing, formatted partitions for 1.3 GB of free space. If Setup detects an existing partition with 1.3 GB of free space, SBS will be installed to that partition and the user will not be able to change the partition size. If the partition is formatted FAT, Setup will convert it to NTFS.

If Setup does not find a suitable partition in which to install, it will present the user with a screen giving the user the option to create or delete partitions. Any existing partition can be deleted and a new partition up to 4 GB in size can then be created.

NOTE: If the user creates a partition through this method, it will not be automatically converted to NTFS. The partition must be formatted NTFS when it is created manually.
