Multiple Faxes Are Not Sent Sequentially on Retrial

ID: Q192094

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

You are using the Small Business Server (SBS) Fax Server for faxing out three faxes. When the first fax detects a busy dial tone, it submits the second fax to send. After the second fax is sent successfully, the first fax will be resubmitted and not the third fax.

CAUSE

This problem happens because the Minutes Between Retries setting on the SBS Fax Server is less than the second fax job finished time. In this case, the Fax Server will retry the first job first and not pass to the third fax.

RESOLUTION

This behavior is by design.

Because it is difficult to determine how long a fax job takes, set an appropriate Minutes Between Retries to a longer value, 5 minutes or even longer, and then the third fax will be sent prior the first resubmission.

To work around the issue, follow these steps to set the Minutes Between Retries on the Fax Server.

  1. Go to Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Fax Server.

  3. Click the Dialing tab.

  4. Under Retry Characteristics, set the Minutes Between Retries to a value that is longer than normal fax job time.

  5. Click OK to go back to Control Panel.

  6. Double-click Services.

  7. Select Microsoft Fax Service and click Stop.

  8. Click Start to restart service again.
