How to Manually Configure SBS for Internet Access

SUMMARY

This article is designed to help a Small Business Server (SBS) customer configure and connect his or her server to the Internet and then be able to provide basic Internet services to computers connected to the SBS Server through the Local Area Network (LAN).

After following the steps in this article, the reader should be able to set up a Small Business Server with Internet connectivity to allow for the following functionality:

  • Allow the SBS Server to connect to the Internet manually or automatically if initiated by the Proxy Service,


  • Allow SBS Client Machines to trigger the SBS Server to connect to Internet via Proxy Auto-Dial,


  • Provide for Web Browsing and individual POP3 email access from the Server and all SBS Clients.


NOTE:

This article does NOT explain the setup of Exchange Server w/SMTP or POP3, or the Internet Mail Service and e-mail queuing.

This article assumes the reader is not using the Internet Signup Wizard and has an existing account with an Internet Service Provider. This article also assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of the Internet and related terminology.

Before Continuing:

You should obtain the following information from your Internet Provider before continuing with this setup:

Required:

  • Phone number - This is the number your server will dial for Internet access.


  • Logon name - The user name provided to you by your ISP for use when logging on.


  • Password - The password provided to you by your ISP for validation.


Optional:

  • Host IP address - If your provider gave you a "static" IP address.


  • DNS server IP addresses - If your provider does not dynamically assign DNS settings


  • Logon script - Only needed if your ISP has a nonstandard logon procedure.


How to Configure RAS and Dial-up Networking

To connect to an Internet Service Provider, the reader must have the Remote Access Service (RAS) and Dial-Up Networking (DUN) installed. Dial-Up Networking must then be configured to connect to an Internet Service Provider using the information from the 'required' section above. Enabling Proxied Internet Access from the Server

To enable proper Internet access from the SBS Server, perform the following steps:

Configure Proxy Auto Dial:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Proxy Server, click Auto Dial Configuration.


  2. On the Dialing Hours tab, select the hours you want to allow the Proxy to be able to connect to the ISP.


  3. Click to select the Enable Dial on Demand check box.


  4. Click the Credentials tab.


  5. Verify the correct Dial-Up Networking phonebook entry is selected in the Entry Name drop down box.


  6. Enter the correct information in the User Name and Password fields.

    NOTE: This will be the User Name and Password provided by your ISP.

    Leave the Domain field blank unless specifically instructed to fill it in by your ISP.


  7. Click Ok.


Set Internet Explorer on the Client to Use the Proxy:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click the Internet Control Panel icon.


  3. Click the Connection tab.

    If you are using Internet Explorer 3.0, you will be see a Connect Through a Proxy Server check box in the upper left corner of the property sheet. If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, skip to step 8.


  4. Click to select the Connect Through a Proxy Server check box labeled.


  5. Verify the HTTP field is filled in as follows:
    http://<server> Port:80
    where <server> is replaced with the IP address of your SBS server (this will be 10.0.0.2 by default).


  6. Click to select the Use the Same Proxy Server for All Protocols check box.


  7. Click OK. Proceed to Section labeled "Disable Proxy Client"


  8. If You Are Using Internet Explorer 4.x:
  9. Click the Connect to the Internet Using the Local Area Network option.


  10. Click to select the Access the Internet Using a Proxy Server check box.


  11. Verify the Address field is filled in as follows:
    http://<server> Port:80
    where <server> is replaced with the IP address of your SBS server (this will be 10.0.0.2 by default).


  12. Click Ok.


Disable Proxy Client on the Server:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control panel.


  2. Double-click the WSP Client icon and remove the check mark from the Enable WinSock Proxy Client box.


  3. Click OK. When prompted, click Restart Windows Now to restart your computer.


After the system has restarted, test Internet access through the Proxy by opening Internet Explorer and browsing a location on the Internet.
