Maximum Licenses Already Installed

ID: Q196202

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install more client licenses to a Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server, the following message is received:

Your computer already has the maximum number of licenses. You cannot add any more licenses to your computer.

CAUSE

This error message is received when Client Licenses in About Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server is fewer than 25 (the maximum number of licenses allowed) and more licenses are needed. The Add Client Licenses process is looking to the registry to confirm the number of licenses installed on the server. The registry entry being checked is set to over 20 decimal.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To work around this problem, perform the following steps:

  1. In the registry, check the ConcurrentLimit for the entry of FilePrint in the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LicenseInfo

  2. If this entry is set to over 20 (14 in hex), change it to the same number of client licenses stated in the About Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server dialog box.

  3. Close the registry.

  4. In Control Panel, double-click Services, and then stop and restart License Logging.

  5. Try to add client licenses again.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem can be caused if the "AutoUsers=" line of the [LicenseFilePrintData] section of the Winnt.sif file is changed to 25 before the installation. The FilePrint value in the registry under the HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LicenseInfo key is set to hex 19 during installation process, but the other license values are set to the user-limit set by the version of the product.

This information applies only to SBS 4.0 and 4.0a. The SBS 4.5 Add Client License process has been modified so the numbers indicated in the registry are different.
