SYMPTOMSWhen you upgrade the Windows NT Server portion of BackOffice Small Business Server to a retail Windows NT Server, the DHCP server files are not updated to allow for the upgraded server to run DHCP with an existing DHCP server on the same network. CAUSE
By default, BackOffice Small Business Server disables its own DHCP server
service upon startup if it detects another DHCP server on the network. This
is by design to prevent the SBS server from becoming a rogue DHCP server
when installed on an existing IP network.
RESOLUTIONIf redundant DHCP servers are required, configure two separate DHCP servers to service the local clients requests and remove the DHCP service from the Small Business Server.
