SBS: One Area Code for Business and Fax Phone Numbers

ID: Q197858

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

Small Business Server (SBS) uses the area code found in the Telephony properties (Telephony tool in Control Panel) as the area code for where the SBS server is located. This can cause the SBS Fax server to dial a "1" with local area codes when sending faxes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, apply Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) if you are using SBS version 4.0 or 4.0a. If you are using SBS 4.5, there is no need to apply SP4 because it is already installed during setup.

Open the Telephony properties and set the Area Code Rules to include the local area codes that should not have a "1" dialed in front of them. This can be done by doing the following:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Telephony.

  2. Click Area Code Rules.

  3. Add the area codes that should not have a "1" dialed in front of them to the bottom section.

Following the above steps will only prevent a "1" from being dialed with the area codes you specify. It will not prevent the area code itself from being dialed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design. The Telephony service will only allow you to prevent a "1" from being dialed; however, it will not prevent different area codes from being dialed when they differ from the one set in the Telephony properties.

MORE INFORMATION

The following scenario illustrates how this problem may arise:

Assume the local area code is 425; however, you need to send a fax to a phone number in the 206 area code, which also happens to be a local area code. When you send the fax, the server will dial a "1" in front of the area code if the local area code is set to 425 in the Telephony properties.
