How to Add an OEM SCSI Controller During SBS Installation
ID: Q201863

The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a
SYMPTOMS
When you do an unattended installation of Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) that contains an upsupported SCSI disk controller, the following error message may be displayed when you restart your computer:
STOP: 0x0000007b Inaccessible Boot device
CAUSE
This problem occurs because SBS may not correctly detect a new SCSI adapter and consequently, load an older driver.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, load the proper driver for your mass-storage device and modify SBS disk 2. The proper driver for your mass-storage device must be supplied from the manufacturer of your mass-storage device. To load the driver and modify SBS disk 2:
- Rename the Winnt.sif file to Winnt.bak on SBS disk 2.
- Copy the Winnt.sif file from the I386 folder on SBS CD 1 to SBS disk 2.
- Start your computer using the modified SBS setup disks. When the computer is starting from disk 1 and the message "Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration..." is displayed, press F6.
NOTE: This occurs when a black screen is displayed and no visible indicators appear when you press F6.
- When prompted, insert the modified SBS disk 2 into the computer.
- The next screen that appears prompts you to specify a mass storage
driver. Press the S key, and then press the down arrow until you see the
listing of OTHER. Insert the driver disk for mass-storage device and
press ENTER twice.
- After the setup program reads the disk, it lists the drivers
available on this disk. Click the driver and press ENTER to
accept the driver.
- Setup will now list the mass-storage device as an installed driver.
If you have any more drivers for other mass storage devices,
press S; if not, press ENTER to continue through setup.
NOTE: Because you are using a modified version of Winnt.sif, you
are prompted to insert disks 2 and 3 several times. Also, check the
format of your partition because SBS requires NTFS.
- The Setup program continues on as expected. However, you are
prompted to insert the disk for your mass-storage device at the copy
phase after you have chosen or formatted a partition on a hard disk
drive.
MORE INFORMATION
The installation process relies on automatic detection of the controller
to load the correct driver. During the installation of SBS, you are not given the opportunity to specify the type of SCSI controller.
