Cannot Modify Shared Folder Permission Through SBS Console

SYMPTOMS

When you try to modify permissions on shared folders using the Manage Server console, the following error is encountered:

The network name could not be found.
This error is followed by:
The Wizard was unable to obtain the permission information for the shared folder "foldername".


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the hidden system shares on the server do not exist or they are not being automatically created at startup.


RESOLUTION

To see if the hidden administrative shares currently exist on the server, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Server.


  3. Click Shares.

    By default, the following shares should exist:
    ADMIN$
    C$ (as well as driveletter$ for each drive in your system)
    IPC$
    Print$

    If these do not exist you will encounter the above error.




To Recreate Hidden System Shares


  1. Click Start, and then click Run.


  2. Type Poledit.exe, and then click OK


  3. Click File, click Open Registry.


  4. Open Local Computer.


  5. Expand Windows NT Network, Sharing.


  6. Click to select both options for creating hidden shares.


  7. Click OK.


  8. Click File, click Exit, click Yes to save changes to registry.


  9. Restart the server.
