The following article describes how to install BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.0 or 4.0a on a computer that is on the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

How to Install SBS 4.0 or 4.0a on a Formatted Drive

  1. Insert SBS Setup Disk 1 into the floppy disk drive, and insert SBS CD-ROM 1 into the CD-ROM drive. Insert Disk 2 and Disk 3 when you are prompted to do so.


  2. If you use the Winnt.sif file located in the I386 folder on the CD-ROM and copy the file to Disk 2, a dialog box with text similar to the following example is displayed:


  3. Setup has recognized the following mass storage devices in your computer:

    Adaptec AHA-294x/aha-3940x/AIC 78xx SCSI controller

    • To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers for use with Windows NT, including those for which you have a device support disk from a mass storage device manufacturer, press S.


    • If you do not have any device support disks from a mass storage device manufacturer, or do not want to specify additional mass storage devices for use with Windows NT, press ENTER.


  4. Press S if you need to specify a mass storage device that is not detected by Microsoft Windows NT (you must have the support disk from the hardware manufacturer). If Windows NT properly identifies your hardware, press ENTER.


  5. After the mass storage detection phase, the following text is displayed in a dialog box:


  6. Setup has determined that your computer contains the following hardware and software components:
    
           Computer:   Standard PC
            Display:   Auto Detect
           Keyboard:   XT, AT, or Enhanced Keyboard (83 - 104 keys)
    Keyboard Layout:   US
    Pointing device:   Microsoft Mouse Port Mouse
    
         No Changes:   The above list matches my computer 
    If you want to change any item in the list, press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to move the highlight to the item you want to change. Then press ENTER to see alternatives for that item.

    When all the items in the list are correct, move the highlight to "The above list matches my computer" and press ENTER.
  7. Check the list to make sure the configuration for your computer is correct. If not, follow the instructions in the dialog box to make any changes. Otherwise, press ENTER.


  8. A dialog box with the following message may be displayed regarding the file system of the partition on which you are installing SBS:


  9. Format the partition using the FAT file System
    Format the partition using the NTFS file System
    Leave the current file system intact (no changes)

    Use UP or DOWN arrows to choose and Press Enter
  10. If this message is displayed, choose the NTFS option, and then press ENTER. Press F to confirm the format, and then continue Setup.


  11. NOTE: Do not use the FAT option. Also, if an incorrect partition is selected, press ESC, choose the appropriate partition, and then press ENTER.

  12. The computer restarts and several dialog boxes appear while Setup is initializing and copying files. Type your personal information, including your computer name and domain name, when the following dialog box is displayed:


  13. Name and Organization Info will be used to personalize your installation on NT

    Name
    Organization
    Computer Name
    Domain Name
    NOTE: When you type your Organization name, the Domain Name is added automatically (it is the same as the Organization name). The Computer Name is automatically added, which is the Organization name followed by 01. The Computer and Domain Name boxes are not active and turn white when you begin typing in the Organization Name box.

  14. Type your CD Key, and then click Next, when the following Registration Screen dialog box is displayed:


  15. Please locate your 10 digit "CD Key" and enter it in the space below. You will find this number on the yellow sticker on the back of your CD case.
  16. Click Next, when the Windows NT Setup dialog box is displayed:


  17. Setup is now ready to guide you through installation of Windows NT networking. If you want to review or change any settings before continuing, click Back.

    To begin installing NT Networking, click Next.

  18. After network Setup is started, several noninteractive dialog boxes are displayed as Setup continues to initialize and install services. Setup is unattended until the Date/Time Properties dialog box is displayed.


  19. NOTE: If a modem is not attached to your computer or is not powered on, the following error message is displayed:
    Remote Access is not configured with any ports. You have an invalid RAS configuration. Please configure Remote Access Service and add ports using the Network option in Control Panel after restarting the system.
    If you receive this error message, click OK.

  20. When the Date/Time Properties dialog box is displayed, click the appropriate time zone, and then click Close.


  21. Setup continues, several more noninteractive dialog boxes are displayed, and the computer restarts.


  22. After the computer is restarted, the system logs on automatically with the Administrator account, and the "Welcome to Windows NT" dialog box is displayed. Click Close.


  23. SBS installation begins. Setup initializes and the "Welcome to the Small Business Server Installation" dialog box is displayed. Click Next.


  24. NOTE: The Back button may be inactive; this is normal behavior.

  25. Type the information for your business, and then click Next, when the following Company Information dialog box is displayed:


  26. NOTE: The Next button is inactive until you type the fax number (including area code).

    Company Information Setup needs the following information about you and your
    organization to complete installation of your server.

    Name:
    Organization Name:
    Address:
    City:
    State:
    Zip:
    Country:
    Business Phone:
    Business Fax:

  27. The Installation Mode dialog box is displayed and you are prompted to select an installation type, either Complete or Custom. If you click More Info, a Help file opens, which lists what a complete installation includes. If you click Complete Installation, all SBS components are installed. If you click Custom Installation, the following dialog box is displayed:


  28. Select Components Components and their parts can be added and removed.

    Check the components to install; clear those you do not want to install. To install only specific options for a component, select the component and then click Show Subcomponents. A shaded box indicates only some options for the component will be installed.

  29. After you select the components you want, make sure the "Total disk space required" value does not exceed the "Space available on disk" value. You can check these values using the indicator in the bottom right corner of the dialog box.


  30. Click Next.


  31. You are prompted to type a password for the Administrator account. Type the password in the password boxes, and then click Next.


  32. NOTE: You must type a password for the Administrator account. If you do not type a password, an "Invalid Password" error message is displayed.

  33. Setup begins installing the SBS components. A Completing Installation dialog box is displayed during installation of the required and selected services. When you are prompted to do so, insert CD-ROM 2 (make sure the path to the CD-ROM is correct), and then click OK.


  34. After this process is complete, click Finish. When you are prompted to do so, click Yes to restart the server.


  35. After the server restarts, one final autologon dialog box is displayed. Setup completes its configuration, and the Manage Server console is displayed in the background.


  36. NOTE: The "Welcome to Windows NT" dialog box is displayed in the foreground. If you do not want this dialog box to be displayed at startup in the future, clear the Show this Welcome Screen next time you start Windows NT check box, and then click Close.
You are now logged on as Administrator, and the SBS installation is complete and ready for configuration.

How to Install SBS 4.0 or 4.0a on an Unformatted Drive

  1. Insert SBS Setup Disk 1 into the floppy disk drive, and insert SBS CD-ROM 1 into the CD-ROM drive. Insert Disk 2 and Disk 3 when you are prompted to do so.


  2. If you use the Winnt.sif file located in the I386 folder on the CD-ROM and copy the file to Disk 2, a dialog box with text similar to the following example is displayed:


  3. Setup has recognized the following mass storage devices in your computer:

  4. Press S if you need to specify a mass storage device that is not detected by Microsoft Windows NT (you need the support disk from the hardware manufacturer). If Windows NT properly identifies your hardware, press ENTER.


  5. Press C, when the following dialog box is displayed:


  6. Setup has determined that your computer's startup hard disk is new or has been erased, or that an operating system is installed on your computer with which Windows NT cannot co-exist.

    If such an operating system is installed on your computer, continuing Setup may damage or destroy it.

    If the hard disk is new or has been erased, or you want to discard its current contents, you can choose to continue setup.

    To continue Setup, Press C.

    WARNING: Any data currently on your computer's startup hard disk will be permanently lost.

    To exit, press F3.
  7. The following dialog box verifying your system components is displayed:
    Setup has determined that your computer contains the following hardware and software components:

    
           Computer:   Standard PC
            Display:   Auto Detect

  8. When you continue, the following dialog box is displayed:


  9. The list below shows existing partitions and space available for creating new partitions.

    Use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to move the highlight to an item in the list.

    To install Windows NT on the highlighted partition or unpartitioned space, press ENTER

    To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.

    To delete the highlighted partition, press D.
  10. Your hard disk drives are listed in a box on the bottom portion of the dialog box. Click to highlight the unpartitioned space on the drive on which you want to install SBS, and then press C to create a partition. Specify the size you want to use for the installation partition.


  11. NOTE: The maximum partition size possible is 4,000 MB. After you type the size in MB, press ENTER.

  12. The newly created partition is displayed as New (Unformatted). Click to highlight this entry, and then press ENTER. Choose the NTFS file system, and then press ENTER.


After you have completed these steps, go to step 8 in the "How to Install SBS 4.0 or 4.0a on Formatted Drive" section of this article and continue Setup.
