SBS Event 201 for SMBServer

ID: Q214844

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

With a Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server domain with 10 or more user licenses, only 5 users can log on to the domain. The sixth user is denied access and, in the Application Log of Event Viewer on the server, the following error message is recorded:

Event 201: No license was available for user 'user_name' using product SMBServer 4.0.
When one or more users who are currently connected log off, someone else can log on.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the concurrent limit set in the registry for FilePrint is wrong. It needs to match the number of licenses Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server has installed.

To check the number of licenses installed:

  1. Start Manage Server (Click Start, and then click Manage Server).

  2. Click About Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, perform the following steps:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Run Regedt32.exe.

  2. Go to the following key:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LicenseInfo\FilePrint

  3. Double-click ConcurrentLimit:REG_DWORD:0xn (where n is the hex value currently set).

  4. Click the Decimal check box in Radix, change the data value to match the number of licenses actually installed on the server, and then click OK.

  5. Close the registry.

  6. In Control Panel, double-click Services.

  7. Stop and restart the License Logging service.
