SBS: Add User Wizard Does Not Support the Use of Special Characters in Username

ID: Q215345

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Add User Wizard to add a user, the following error message is displayed:

The account name can contain only A-Z, a-z and 0-9.
Users expect the wizard should accept Double-Byte Character Set (DBCS) user account names.

Corporate standards may require the use of a hyphen as part of a user account name or e-mail.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when an invalid character is used for a user account name.

In SBS 4.0 and 4.0a, only A-Z, a-z, and 0-9 characters can be used as part of a user account name.

In SBS 4.5, only the following characters are restricted:

"/\\[]:;|=,+*?<>

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method:

  • In SBS 4.0 or 4.0a, type a user name that consists of the valid characters referenced above (A-Z, a-z, 0-9).

  • In SBS 4.5, type a user name that does not contain the following restricted characters:

  • "/\\[]:;|=,+*?<>
