SBS: Fax and Modem Sharing Components Are Not Upgradable After SBS Has Been Upgraded to BackOffice Server

ID: Q216761

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SUMMARY

Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) includes a fax server and a modem sharing service. The fax server and modem sharing service allow users of an SBS network to send and receive faxes, as well as dial out through any modems connected to the SBS server. If the SBS server is upgraded to either BackOffice Server 4.0 or BackOffice Server 4.5, both the fax server and the modem sharing service will no longer be upgradable to future versions of the fax server or modem sharing service.

MORE INFORMATION

Both fax server and modem sharing are unique components of SBS, which are not available through any other Microsoft platform. After an SBS server has been upgraded to BackOffice Server, both of these components will continue to function normally; however, because they are no longer running on an SBS server/platform, they are no longer capable of being upgraded.
