SBS Modem Sharing Displays Port with a UPS on it as an Available Modem Pool

SYMPTOMS

When you view the Modem Sharing service in Control Panel, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) may be displayed as an available modem pool when the Modem Sharing service connects to a COM port.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because all DATAMODEM-capable Telephony API (TAPI) devices are grouped into pools by default during Modem Sharing Setup.

For example, all Sportster 33600 modems are grouped into a pool, all Boca 28800 modems are grouped into pool, and all serial ports (with no modems connected to them) are grouped into another pool.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

Remove the UPS pool from the Modem Sharing Pool list.

Modify the command strings for the UPS so it does not respond as a modem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5.

During the configuration portion of Modem Sharing Setup, a query is issued to the serial ports. If the device answers TRUE, it is treated as a modem. If the UPS has these capabilities, it can be shared, and a Modem Sharing client can map a port to this pool and communicate with the UPS.
