"Send and Receive Now" Feature in Full-Time and Router Scenarios

ID: Q218108

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.5

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SUMMARY

BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) provides the Send and Receive Now feature, which forces e-mail transmission to happen immediately. This overrides the default configuration settings for Dial-up Connections. These configuration settings are used with periodic dialing in the properties of Internet Mail Service. To force immediate e-mail transmission, in SBS Console, click the Tasks tab, click Manage Electronic Mail, and then click Send and Receive Now.

In a full-time or router scenario, the Send and Receive Now feature does nothing but cycle the Internet Mail Service, which is unnecessary for this configuration because it does not use a dial-up connection.

In a modem scenario, the Send and Receive Now feature cycles the Internet Mail Service, forces the server to dial-up to your Internet Service Provider, transfers e-mail from the outbound queue, and retrieves any e-mail queued for delivery.

MORE INFORMATION

In a full-time or router scenario, use Registry Editor to manually disable this feature:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

  2. Locate the MS_IMS value under the following key in the registry:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Small Business\Internet\

  3. Change the value of the Mail_Retrieval_Method key to None.

  4. Quit Registry Editor.
