"My Computer" Is Unavailable in Add Printers

SYMPTOMS

The printers that were once set up in the Printers folder in Control Panel have disappeared and only the Add Printer icon is available. When Add Printer is started, the My Computer radio button is unavailable. When you try to use the Network Printer Option, an error message indicating that the current user does not have the proper permissions to complete the task is received.


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the spooler service is not properly configured.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, perform the following steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Services.


  2. Double-click the Spooler service.


  3. Verify the following settings:

    • The Startup value should be set to Automatic.


    • Log On As should be set to System.


    • The Allow Service to Interact with Desktop check box should be selected.
