Exchsrvr: Access Violation on an SBS or BackOffice Server

ID: Q220864

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.5
  • Microsoft BackOffice Server version 4.5
  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5

SYMPTOMS

Both Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) version 4.5 and Microsoft BackOffice Server version 4.5 include Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 as a component of a suite of server applications. When installing either BackOffice or SBS, the installer is prompted to provide a unique computer name that will identify this computer from others on the network.

If a computer name consisting solely of numeric values is used, it may cause the Exchange Server to return access violations errors. For example, a computer name of "101" could cause the Exchange Server to return access violation errors.

NOTE: This problem is not limited to computers with names consisting of three numeric values; "101" is simply used as an example of a computer name made up solely of numeric values.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use computer name that consists of either alphanumeric or solely alphabetical characters. The following is an example of each:

  • Alphanumeric: ComputerName101

  • Alphabetical only: ComputerName

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
