This article describes the individual Microsoft BackOffice components included with BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5.

Each component of SBS 4.5 is described separately. Any differences that exist in the SBS 4.5 component (as compared to the BackOffice component) are also listed.
Microsoft Windows NT
- Windows NT 4.0 is installed and updated with Service Pack 4.
- Licensing is limited to 50 concurrent users and is strictly enforced. License Manager is disabled so that licenses can only be added using Client Add Packs.
- Windows NT domain trusts are disabled.
- The domain, computer name, and organization dialog boxes are combined to ensure that invalid characters for Microsoft SQL Server and Internet e-mail standards are not allowed during installation.
- SBS is autoconverted from FAT to NTFS during Setup.
- NetBT is changed so that a Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)/Remote Access Service (RAS) server registers its name remotely (with a WINS server) instead of locally.
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is changed so the SBS computer does not become a rogue DHCP server.
- RAS is changed to allow successful fax and RAS handoff. RAS is configured for access to the local computer only for additional security.
- SBS is installed only as a primary domain controller (PDC) in a new domain.
- The concept of security groups is removed. Users are added as users or administrators.
- TCP/IP is the only network protocol installed. IPX and NetBEUI are shipped with SBS 4.5 but are not installed.
- The DHCP server and WINS services are installed by default.
Microsoft Exchange Server
- The SBS 4.5 version of Exchange Server 5.5 is limited in the number of concurrent connections based on the number of client access licenses on the SBS computer, up to a maximum of 50.
- Exchange Server 5.5 is installed with Service Pack 2.
- Exchange Server is installed as its own organization as a single site or server, so it cannot replicate with other sites.
- The Internet Mail Service connector is installed on SBS by default. The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) and Microsoft Outlook Web Access can be added.
- The following Exchange Server components are not included in SBS 4.5:
- Message transfer agent (MTA) transport stack
- Dynamic RAS connector
- Site connector
- Directory replication connector
- Information store (the SBS computer cannot be only a public folder or private information store)
Internet Information Server/Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack
- By default, SBS installs the following Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack components:
- Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions
- Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0
- Microsoft Data Access Components 2.1
- Index Server 2.0
- Microsoft Management Console
- Microsoft Script Debugger 1.0
- Transaction Server 2.0
- IIS 4.0 is installed by default on SBS and is required for core functionality including the Manage Server console.
- The Gopher and FTP services are not installed.
SQL Server
- SQL Server 7.0 is installed.
- SQL Server is limited to the number of concurrent users added using Client Add Packs. The number of physical user connections SQL Server allows is not related to licensing and is not restricted by the SBS edition. A single licensed user may have multiple open SQL Server connections simultaneously.
- SQL Server user database data files are limited to a total of 10 GB per database. The database log files do not count against this restriction and are not limited in size.
- The performance of the SBS edition is limited to the throughput typical of 50 concurrent users, although individual installations of SBS may be licensed for fewer than 50 users. If the load on the server exceeds that of 50 typical users, new connections are still accepted, but a performance penalty is introduced.
Microsoft Proxy Server
- Proxy Server 2.0 is installed during the SBS installation.
- Access Control is enabled by default.
- Packet Filters are configured in relation to the firewall options selected in the SBS Internet Connectivity Wizard.
Modem Sharing Service
- The Modem Sharing service is unique to SBS.
- This service supports up to four shared modems.
- For compatible devices, refer to the SBS hardware recommendations referenced below.
SBS Fax Service
- The SBS Fax service supports up to four class 1 fax modems.
- The Fax service is unique to SBS.
- For compatible devices, refer to the SBS hardware recommendations referenced below.
NOTES:
- IIS, Proxy Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server, the Fax service, and the Modem Sharing service can be installed only on the SBS computer.
- SBS can be upgraded to the full BackOffice product suite.
