Cannot Upgrade BackOffice Small Business Server

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade an existing installation of BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.0 or 4.0a to SBS 4.5, you may receive the following error message:

This version of Small Business Server cannot be used to upgrade existing installations of Small Business Server or BackOffice Server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you use a Not For Resale (NFR) version of SBS 4.5 to upgrade. The NFR version is for testing purposes only and cannot be used as an upgrade.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, purchase a retail copy of SBS 4.5 or the Version Upgrade (VUP) for SBS 4.5.
