Fax Server Does Not Continue Retry Attempts of Fax Job if Server Is Restarted

ID: Q225259

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

If you create a fax job that the BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) fax server is unable to immediately deliver, the fax job remains in the fax queue while the server waits for the next retry attempt. During an attempt to resend the fax, the following error message may be displayed in the fax queue dialog box:

Could not send fax document due to an unrecoverable error.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the fax server is restarted during an attempt to resend the fax. The Microsoft Windows NT print spooler does not currently support attempts to resend fax jobs after a server is restarted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must resend fax jobs that are not transmitted before the fax server is restarted. Old fax jobs must be manually deleted.

MORE INFORMATION

Two events may be logged in Event Viewer for each fax job in the queue if this problem occurs. The Event IDs are 10 and 11, the source is Print, and the user is System.
