MSMQ Does Not Install After Upgrade from SBS 4.0 to SBS 4.5

ID: Q225265

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

If a BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) computer has been upgraded from SBS 4.0 to SBS 4.5, the following error message may be displayed if you try to add the Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) service from the Microsoft Windows NT Option Pack.

Microsoft Message Queue Setup Error
Unable to start the SQLExecutive service.
Error Code = 0x422
The error occurs when trying to create the MQIS database.

If Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 is not installed, or has been upgraded to SQL Server 7.0, this error does not occur.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because both SQL Server 6.5 and SQL Server 7.0 exist on the server after the upgrade, however, the SQL Server 6.5 SQLExecutive service is set to disabled by default.

When MSMQ is installed, it tries to start the SQL Server 6.5 SQLExecutive service. Because the service is set to disabled, it does not start and generates the error message above.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

  • If you plan to use SQL Server 6.5 with the Message Queue Information Store database, set the SQLExecutive service to start manually or automatically.

  • If you prefer to use SQL Server 7.0, uninstall SQL Server 6.5 or run the SQL Server Upgrade Wizard.
