CAL Is Not Released When Client Is Shut Down with Mail Client Open

SUMMARY

If BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) client computers are shut down with Microsoft Outlook still running, the Client Access License (CAL) that was being used by Outlook may remain locked open. If this occurs on enough SBS clients, it is possible that too many CALs may be locked open even though there may be enough CALS on the server. Locking the CALs open may result in users not being able to access their mailboxes.


MORE INFORMATION

All SBS client computers should be "gracefully" shut down and then powered off. This means that you should quit any programs that are running first, then shut down Windows NT properly. Windows is shut down properly by performing the following steps:

  1. Quit all running applications.


  2. On the Desktop, click the Start button.


  3. Click Shut Down.


  4. Click OK.


If a computer is physically shut down with Outlook still open, the license that has been locked open can be reset by doing one of the following:

  • Wait approximately 2 hours and the SBS server will release the CAL.


  • Restart the SBS server. It is important that all SBS clients are instructed to save their work and log off the server prior to restarting.
