Reinstalling the Small Business Server Console

SUMMARY

In Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5, there is a command-line option you can use to reinstall the SBS console. This option is designed to restore functionality of the SBS console by verifying and updating the necessary default settings of components.

You can use the SBSSETUP.EXE /REINSTALL command from SBS 4.5 CD3 to force a reinstallation of the console and all of its components.

NOTE: In CD3 of SBS 4.5, the path is:

\sbsadmin\i386\sbssetup.exe /reinstall

Reinstallation overwrites all files in the root of the %SystemDrive%\SmallBusiness folder and the Html subfolder, with a few exceptions. The console reinstallation performs the following tasks:

  1. Verify and overwrite all files mentioned in the SmallBusiness folder.


  2. Unregister and re-register all controls.


  3. Rename the following files:

    1. %SystemDrive%\SmallBusiness\Scw.ini to Scw.old


    2. %SystemDrive%\SmallBusiness\Template\Clioc.inf to Clioc.old.


    3. %SystemDrive%\InetPub\Wwwroot\Intranet\Default.htm to Default.old


    4. %SystemDrive%\InetPub\Wwwroot\Default.htm to Default.old




  4. Back up the registry. The SmallBusiness key is renamed to SmallBusinessOldx, where x is a sequential number between 1 and 20. The maximum number of times you can preserve these settings is 20. For example, the first reinstallation creates a key called SmallBusinessOld1, and sequential reinstallations create SmallBusinessOld2, SmallBusinessOld3, and so on. The entire SmallBusiness tree is preserved.


  5. Reset the access control lists on all the files and folders listed above to their default settings.



NOTE: When you reinstall the SBS console and restart the computer, an error message is displayed stating that the fax service cannot log on to the administrator's MAPI profile.

MORE INFORMATION

If any files are in use during the installation, they are copied after you restart the server. The information that is passed to the Administrator component during Setup is not available, so these keys are not written.
