Key Fixes Implemented in the SBS 4.5 Fax Service

  • E-mail confirmation of sent faxes is enabled by default. Users receive an e-mail confirmation of the sent fax after it has cleared the queue. Additionally, e-mail confirmation has been fixed for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 clients, which does not work in SBS 4.0.

  • On an SBS 4.0-based computer with e-mail notification enabled, an unsuccessful fax sends a notification message with incorrect information. This has been fixed in SBS 4.5.

  • The SBS Console has been improved to manage fax jobs in the print spooler. You can cancel and restart fax jobs in SBS 4.5.

  • In SBS 4.0, fax jobs sent by Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98 clients do not succeed if RAS or Proxy is using the line. In SBS 4.5, the faxes are submitted to the queue and sent once the line is freed up.

  • In SBS 4.0, when you are faxing from Microsoft Outlook on Windows 95/Windows 98 clients, you have to manually fill out the fax information boxes (for example, the Send To and Fax Number boxes) for each recipient and each attachment. In SBS 4.5, this information is automatically populated and the fax is automatically sent. The wizard dialog box no longer appears for every fax recipient.

  • In SBS 4.0, saved faxes sent by Windows 95/Windows 98 clients cannot be viewed correctly; an internal error message is displayed. This has been fixed in SBS 4.5.

  • A number of localization issues have been addressed. For example, some Far East builds do not have performance counters in SBS 4.0, and this has been fixed. Some warning and error message dialog boxes are illegible in the Japanese-language version of SBS 4.0. Also, cover pages and additional user interface fields are now localized correctly.

  • To better support ISDN technology, Microsoft worked closely with Eicon and tested all their ISDN adapters with SBS 4.5. Eicon drivers are included on the SBS 4.5 CD-ROM.

  • HTML and text files can be faxed from Outlook.

  • The SBS 4.5 Fax service Setup program is improved by prepopulating some known boxes, such as Country and Area Code.

  • In SBS 4.0, Windows 95/Windows 98 clients allow you to select either server or personal cover pages, but only server pages work. Windows NT clients allow you to select only server cover pages. Also, there are instances in which the server cover pages are not installed on Windows 95 clients. Because the personal cover page do not work, some Windows 95 clients have no cover page options. In SBS 4.5, all clients have the ability to use either server or personal cover pages.

  • If the SBS 4.0 Fax service is processing a fax, any changes in the Fax Service tool in Control Panel cause the Fax service to stop responding (hang). This has been fixed in SBS 4.5.

  • If a user has fax confirmation turned on and send a fax from a Windows 95 client in SBS 4.0, the fax confirmation shows that the number of pages sent is always zero, rather than the actual number of pages.

  • The Fax Status properties in SBS 4.0 display a warning icon rather than an information icon, so users may be misled into thinking there is a problem.

  • The Fax Recipient Name box does not show the sender's TSID in SBS 4.5.

  • The SBS 4.0 fax cover page editor displays several unavailable boxes that are not and cannot be made available to users. These boxes have been removed.
