SBS 4.0 Client Add Pack Does Not Add Licenses After Upgrade to SBS 4.5

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.0 Client Add Pack to increase the number of licenses on an SBS 4.0 or SBS 4.0a computer, you are unable to add licenses if you reinstall SBS 4.0a and immediately upgrade to SBS 4.5.

If you attempt to use the SBS 4.0 Client Add Pack on the upgraded server, you receive an error message that the server already has x client licenses, even though fewer client licenses are displayed in the console.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the license information written to the disk is different in SBS 4.0 and SBS 4.5. The Client Add Pack compares the license information on the server with the information previously written to disk. When the information does not compare, the error message is displayed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, reuse the SBS 4.0 Client Add Pack before you upgrade a server to SBS 4.5.

You can use an unused SBS 4.0 Client Add Pack to increase the number of licenses on an SBS 4.5 computer to 20.

You can use the SBS 4.5 Client Add Pack to increase the number of licenses on an SBS 4.0 computer to 25, but you cannot use it if the new licenses increase the user limit on the server beyond the 25-user limit in SBS 4.0.
