SUMMARY
Adequate disk space is important when you upgrade to Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 or install SBS 4.5 on your computer. Actual size requirements vary, depending on what programs you install and what type of installation you perform (new installation versus an upgrade).
MORE INFORMATIONDuring the SBS 4.5 installation or upgrade, the Your Small Business Server Installation dialog box is displayed. It lists the hard disk space requirements and actual space available calculations:
NOTE: Adequate preparation (including a complete current tape backup) is extremely valuable, especially in the event a recovery is required. Remember to review the Readme file carefully and resolve any error messages noted in the event log. New Installation of SBS 4.5Complete InstallationFor a complete installation of SBS 4.5, you need a minimum of at least 1.3 GB of total free space on the target drive or drives. The system partition must have a minimum of 750 MB of free space and the remaining 550 MB of free space can be located on another NTFS partition. In a new installation only, you can choose to install the following programs to an NTFS partition other than the system partition (usually drive C).
Custom InstallationIf you do not install Client Applications and SQL Server 7.0, the SBS 4.5 installation requires only 378 MB of available free space in addition to the 750 MB on the system partition, which means the total space needed is 1.123 GB.If you install only the required programs that are selected, you need a minimum of 378 MB of available free space in addition to the 750 MB on the system partition, which means the total space needed is 990 MB. Upgrading SBS 4.0/4.0a to SBS 4.5Complete UpgradeFor a complete upgrade to SBS 4.5, you need a minimum of 1.3 GB of available free space. The system partition must have at least 750 MB of free space and the remaining 550 MB of free space can be located on another NTFS partition.During a complete upgrade, you can choose to install SQL Server 7.0 (Mssql7) and the new Client Applications (ClientApps) on another NTFS partition. Exchange Server must be upgraded in the partition in which it is currently installed. Exchange Server folders may have been moved to another partition by running Performance Optimizer. Custom UpgradeIf you do not install Client Applications and SQL Server 7.0, the SBS 4.5 upgrade requires a minimum of 378 MB of available free space in addition to the 750 MB on the system partition, which means the total space needed is 990 MB.NOTE: All other programs are unavailable if SBS 4.0/4.0a was installed using the complete installation. Creating Free Space Before You UpgradeIf you do not have sufficient free space to upgrade, it is best to create the space needed prior to starting the upgrade process. If needed, you can delete most of the current client programs located in the current SmallBusiness\Clients folder.NOTE: Do not delete the Clients\Ms\Proxy folder before upgrading to SBS 4.5. You can delete the other subfolders in the Clients folder and the other subfolders in the Clients\Ms folder. This creates approximately 330 MB of additional free space on the drive.
