Removing and Reinstalling NT Option Pack installs wrong version of MMC

SYMPTOMS

After you manually remove and reinstall the Windows NT Option Pack and Proxy Server, the SBS Management Console does not open and the following error message may be displayed:

The selected file is not a Microsoft Management Console document.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Windows NT Option Pack and Proxy Server are reinstalled manually. The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) is not updated to the proper version.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, perform one of the following:

  • After you remove the Windows NT Option Pack and Proxy Server, reinstall the Windows NT Option Pack, Proxy Server, and MMC using the BackOffice 4.5 Setup program. To do this:

    1. Insert the BackOffice Small Business Server CD Disk 2 into your CD-ROM drive.


    2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft BackOffice, and then click Microsoft BackOffice 4.5 Setup.


    3. The Setup program begin to run, and prompts you for the Administrator password. Type in the Administrator password, and then click Next.


    4. Select Custom Installation, and then click Next.


    5. In the Small Business Server Applications Installation window, select Windows NT Option Pack, Proxy Server 2.0, and the MMC 1.1. Click Next to continue.


    6. At the Your Small Business Server Installation window, accept the defaults, and then click Next to continue.

      Setup then installs the components and completes the installation process.


    After the the Windows NT Option Pack, Proxy Server, and the MMC are reinstalled, the SBS console needs to be reinstalled. To do this:
    1. Insert SBS CD Disk 3 into your CD-ROM drive.


    2. Click Start, click Run, type the following, and then click OK:
      x:\SBSAdmin\i386\SBSSetup.exe /reinstall
      NOTE: Replace X with the appropriate drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.

      NOTE: When the console is being reinstalled, there are no dialog boxes displayed on the screen, however, you may notice hard drive activity. After the console is reinstalled, a dialog box appears indicating the console has been reinstalled successfully.


    3. Restart the server, and the SBS Management console should now function as expected.




  • -or-

  • Manually reinstall the MMC and SBS console. To do this:

    1. Insert the Small Business Server CD Disk 2 into your CD-ROM drive.


    2. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK.
      x:\mmc\i386\setupmmc.exe
      NOTE: Replace X with the appropriate drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.


    3. At the Welcome to Microsoft Management Console 1.1 Setup window, click Next.


    4. Please read the End User License Agreement, by clicking I agree and then clicking Next, you may continue MMC installation. If you do not accept the End User License Agreement, you may be unable to install the MMC.


    5. Type your personal information in the text boxes provided, and then click Next.


    6. After Setup copies the necessary files, click Finish to complete the installation process.


    7. Retstart the server, and the SBS Management Console should now function as expected.


    After the Microsoft Management console is reinstalled, the SBS console needs to be reinstalled. To do this:
    1. Insert SBS CD 3 into your CD-ROM drive.


    2. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK.
      x:\sbsadmin\i386\sbssetup.exe /reinstall
      NOTE: Replace x with the appropriate drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.

      NOTE: When the console is being reinstalled, there are no dialog boxes displayed on the screen, however, you may notice hard drive activity. After the console is reinstalled, a dialog box appears indicating the console has been reinstalled successfully.


    3. Restart the server, and the SBS Management console should now function as expected.
