How to Move Exchange Server Databases in Small Business Server

ID: Q238761

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SUMMARY

Over time, the drive on which Small Business Server (SBS) and Microsoft Exchange Server are installed may become low on disk space, which may eventually lead to "maximum buffer" error messages in Exchange Server. If it becomes necessary to move the Exchange Server databases and log files to another drive, you must use specific steps to prevent the following error message in the application log:

Error -1811. Database may have been moved.
Recovery will continue with the database in the new location

MORE INFORMATION

To properly move the Exchange Server databases to another drive on the computer running SBS:

  1. Run an online or offline backup of the Exchange Server folders (online backup is the preferred method of backing up Exchange Server).

  2. Run Exchange Server Optimizer and move the databases to another drive. The optimizer automatically selects the best location for the databases, but you can specify the drive on which you want to put the private and public information store. You should put the information store log on the same drive as the private and public information store.

  3. Run a backup immediately after the Information Store service is started.
