TPU: How to Manually Remove Team Productivity Update

SUMMARY

This article describes how to manually uninstall Team Productivity Update (TPU). You may need to use this method if an attempt to uninstall TPU is not successful.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To remove TPU manually:

  1. Remove the following products (if they are still listed) in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel:


    • Microsoft Team Productivity Update (only if you have not attempted the uninstallation)


    • Microsoft Outlook 2000 Team Folders Wizard


    • Office Server Extensions (optional)


  2. Stop the following services by using the Services tool in Control Panel (if they are running):


    • tfservice


    • TFWrapSvc


    • TWSApproval


    • IIS Admin Service (and the dependent World Wide Web Publishing service)


  3. Start Internet Service Manager. Under Default Web Site, delete the virtual directory for TPUWeb and the virtual directories for any Team Workspaces that have been created.


  4. Find and delete the following folders on the local hard disk, if they exist (where Drive is the letter of the drive on which Microsoft Windows NT and TPU are installed):


    • Drive:\Program Files\TeamProductivityUpdate


    • Drive:\Winnt\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Team Productivity Update


    • Drive:\Public (contains the TPU client share)


    • Drive:\InetPub\wwwroot\TPUWeb


    • Drive:\InetPub\wwwroot\TeamDocs


    • Drive:\InetPub\wwwroot\TeamFolders


  5. Delete the Tpusetup.exe and Tpusetup.log files in the Temp folder.


  6. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) and delete the following keys:


    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\tfservice


    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TFWrapSvc


    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TWSApproval


    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Team Productivity


    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft Team Productivity Update


  7. Delete the Team Productivity Update folders within the Microsoft Exchange public folders.


  8. Start SQL Enterprise Manager and remove the following databases:


    • MSTWS


    • TFConfig


  9. Reboot the server.


  10. An additional step may be required to remove an add-in for Outlook clients. When you start Outlook, the following error message may appear:


  11. Team Workspace

    You are currently working offline

    Any changes made to team workspace shortcuts will not be saved.
    If you receive this error message when you start Outlook 2000 on a client or the server, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Other tab, click Advanced Options, and then click COM Add-Ins. Click TPU Outlook Synchronizing Add-In, and then click Remove.

  12. Remove the following items from the Downloaded Program Files folder on each client:


    • Microsoft Outlook View Control


    • OSAddIn Class


    On a Microsoft Windows 98 client, right-click each of the items listed above in the Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder, and then click Remove.

    On a Windows NT client (and on the server), right-click each of the items listed above in the Winnt\Downloaded Program Files folder, and then click Remove.
