Client Program Installation Does Not Work After Small Business Server 4.5 Upgrade

ID: Q241379

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.5

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade client programs on Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 clients, you may receive the following error message:

Error: Copy error, an error has occurred copying CLIOC.INF, be sure that the location below is correct.
Details: Access is Denied, error #5,
Source file
\\Path to Application share on server\Clioc.inf.
Destination file \\servername\clients\response\computername\installed.
Each time the user logs on, the wizard to install client programs starts. The error message is displayed again, and this behavior repeats continuously until the client programs are successfully installed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if user accounts do not have proper permissions to files or subfolders in the Small Business\Clients folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the Small Business\Clients folder on the server.

  2. Right-click the Clients folder, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Sharing tab, ensure that the folder is shared as Clients.

  4. On the Security tab, click Permissions, and then assign Full Control permission to the Everyone group.

  5. Click to select the Replace Permissions on Subdirectories check box, and then click OK.

  6. Install the client program upgrades on all client computers.

MORE INFORMATION

For security purposes, after you update all programs on the SBS clients, restore the default permission for the client share:

  1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Clients folder, and then click Properties.

  2. On the Security tab, click Permissions, and then remove the Everyone group.

  3. Click to clear the Replace Permissions on Subdirectories check box, and then click OK.
