Error Message: The Filename, Director Name, or Volume Label Syntax Is Incorrect

SYMPTOMS

When you click on either the Edit Workspace Home Page link or the Edit Guest Page link on the Configure Your Team Workspace Web page, you may receive the following error message:

Notepad

The filename, director name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you configure Internet Explorer 5 to use Microsoft Notepad as the default HTML editor.

NOTE: Notepad cannot open a file using a URL, network path, or non-standard file location.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the default HTML editor to something that can open files using a URL or network path, or open the ASP page manually in Notepad from the server.

To change the default HTML Editor in Internet Explorer 5.0, follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.


  2. On the Programstab, click an HTML editor that can open files using a URL in the HTML editor box, and then click OK.

When you click the links to edit the Team Workspace Web pages, a URL is passed as a parameter to the program that is configured to be the default HTML editor in Internet Explorer 5. If the program cannot open a document using a URL, then this error message is displayed. Notepad is a program that cannot open a document using a URL.
