Error Message: Server Could Not Validate User Credentials

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to the Team Productivity Update (TPU) Server Start page, you may receive the following error message:

Server could not validate user credentials.
If you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e4d'

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e4d'

Login failed for user SOMEDOMAIN\USER.

CAUSE

This issue can occur when the user connecting to the TPU Server Start page does not have SQL login permissions for the MSTWS database on the TPU Server.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Enterprise manager to add the SQL login for the SQL Server databases.

  1. Open SQL Enterprise Manager.


  2. Double-click SQL Server Group, and then double-click your server name.


  3. Under your server name, double-click Security.


  4. Right-click Logins, and then click New Login.


  5. In the Name field, click the user or group you want to add, and then click OK.
