SBS Console May Not Start Correctly with "ActiveX Control" Error Message

ID: Q241582

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SYMPTOMS

The Small Business Server (SBS) console may generate logon error messages or may not start properly. Also, an authentication dialog box may appear and the following error message may be displayed:

An ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current security settings prohibit running unsafe controls on this page. As a result, this page may not display as intended.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of either of the following reasons:

  • The security settings for trusted sites in Microsoft Internet Explorer are changed from Low (the default setting) to High, Medium, Medium-Low, or Custom Level.

  • The http://localhost site does not appear on the trusted sites list.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.

  2. On the Security tab, click Trusted sites.

  3. In the Security level for this zone area, change the security setting to Low (you can adjust the security level by moving the slider up or down, or by clicking Default Level).

  4. To verify that http://localhost is a trusted site, click Sites to view the list.

  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
