SBS: Enabling Adaptive Answer in SBS

ID: Q244965

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5

SUMMARY

The Small Business Server (SBS) Fax service can enable adaptive answer features on a fax modem so that you can use one modem to receive both incoming faxes and incoming Remote Access Services (RAS) calls. This function can be enabled by default by SBS if it detects your exact fax modem model from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Faxadapt.lst file.

You may be able to configure class 1 fax modems that are listed on the Microsoft Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) but do not appear in this file for adaptive answer, but the .inf file for the modem must contain the correct strings for the modem's firmware revision.

If the modem's manufacturer does not have the appropriate adaptive answer strings for the modem, you cannot configure the Fax service and RAS to receive calls on the same modem.

MORE INFORMATION

A modem that is identified during installation as a modem in the Faxadapt.lst file may not work correctly if the modem is incorrectly detected. The best way to enable adaptive answer is to contact the modem's manufacturer to make sure that the modem supports adaptive answer, and obtain the correct .inf file for the modem's firmware revision. The following modems are contained in Faxadapt.lst file and are automatically configured for adaptive answer:

  • Suprafaxmodem 288
  • Sportster 28800-33600 External
  • Courier V.Everything
  • Practical Peripherals PM288MT II V.34
  • Hayes Accura 144 + FAX144
  • Hayes Accura 288 V.FC + FAX
  • Hayes Optima 288 V.34-V.FC + FAX + VOICE
  • Suprasonic 336V+
  • Sportster 28800-33600 Internal
  • Courier V.Everything PCMCIA
  • Suprafaxmodem 288(336)
  • Hayes Optima 336 V.34 + FAX + VOICE
  • Supraexpress 336 PNP
NOTE: A modem .inf file is an information file that contains strings and information for an individual make and model of modem. These files are specific to the modem and firmware, and must be verified with the modem's manufacturer.
