SBS POP3 Connector Stops Receiving Mail Because of Changes in IMS Settings

ID: Q247451

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.5

SYMPTOMS

The POP3 Connector for Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 relies on the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service (IMS) to retrieve mail and distribute it to the proper Exchange mailboxes. Changes made to IMS may cause the POP3 Connector to either stop distributing messages or stop connecting to the POP3 server to collect messages. When this issue occurs, no event log error messages are logged. Individual messages are stored in the following two folders as .mmd files:

  • Program Files\POP3 Connector\Incoming
  • Program Files\POP3 Connector\Inforward
This article describes the settings that must be in place for the POP3 Connector to work properly.

CAUSE

Changing either of the following values for IMS causes the POP3 Connector not to work correctly:

  • On the Connections tab, changing the transfer mode.

  • On the Routing tab, enabling the Reroute Incoming SMTP Mail option without reconfiguring routing.

RESOLUTION

Make sure that the following settings are correct in IMS.

NOTE: Skip steps 2 and 3 if you are retrieving Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) mail by using the ETRN command from another mail server.

  1. Start the Exchange Administrator program, and then click the Connections container. Double-click Internet Mail Service.

  2. On the Dial-up Connections tab, click Mail Retrieval.

  3. Click Do not send retrieval command, and then click OK.

  4. On the Connections tab, click Inbound and Outbound under Transfer Mode.

  5. On the Routing tab, click Do not reroute incoming SMTP mail.

  6. Click OK. You receive a warning message indicating that you need to stop and restart IMS for the settings to take effect. Click OK.

  7. In Control Panel, double-click Services.

  8. Click Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service. Click Stop, and then click OK. After IMS has stopped, click Start.

  9. Restart the Microsoft Exchange POP3 Connecter service in the same manner.

MORE INFORMATION

There may be a number of messages stored in the Program Files\POP3 Connector\Inforward folder. These may take some time to be processed completely and reach their intended recipients. You can expedite this process by clicking Deliver Now in the POP3 Connector settings in Exchange Administrator.
