IAS Support for Ports Under 1024

ID: Q188299

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 2.0
  • Microsoft Site Server version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

The IAS Radius server that ships with the Windows NT 4.0 Options Pack (NTOP) and Microsoft Commercial Internet Systems (MCIS) does not support port configurations under 1024 for communication to a Network Access Server (NAS) or other radius client software.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

http://www.microsoft.com/support/supportnet/overview/overview.asp
This fix allows the use of ports below 1024. Again, Microsoft recommends that customers do not install this fix, unless they have a specific need to use non-standard ports. Continue to use ports 1812/1813 per RFC 2138/2139 r purposed, (Web, FTP, and so on).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The ability to use non-standard UDP ports was added because of the specification change noted below.

Implementation Note:

This memo documents the RADIUS protocol. There has been some confusion in the assignment of port numbers for this protocol. The early deployment of RADIUS was done using the erroneously chosen port number 1645, which conflicts with the "datametrics" service. The officially assigned port number for RADIUS is 1812.
