Failure to Load Ontciutl.dll

SYMPTOMS

The Indexer is not loaded and the following event messages are present in the Event Viewer:

   SSSearch - Indexer - EventId 7034
   Unable to load DLL <C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ContentIndex
   \ontciutl.dll>.
   Error: 5 - Access is denied.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path is in the SYSTEM path variable or the user PATH variable.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Remove UNC paths in the SYSTEM and USER path variables, if possible.

2. If that is not possible, add the location %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program

   Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\ContentIndex before any UNC in the SYSTEM
   path. Then restart the computer. A restart is required for SYSTEM
   path changes to take effect.
