SUMMARY

Microsoft Internet Locator Server (ILS) is used to serve as a directory for Microsoft NetMeeting clients to establish NetMeeting sessions. ILS uses the Personalization & Membership (P&M) features of Site Server 3.0. In order to successfully create an ILS instance, you must configure P&M as a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)-only membership server. This article shows you how to do this.

Steps to Configure P&M as an LDAP-Only Membership Server

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Site Server, point to Administration, and then click Site Server Service Admin (MMC).


  2. Expand Personalization and Membership.


  3. Expand the server.


  4. Right-click the server name, point to New, and then click Membership Server Instance to start the New Membership Server Wizard.


  5. Click Next, select Custom for the configuration type, and then click Next.


  6. Under configuration options, clear the Active User Object check box, select the LDAP service check box, and then click Next.


  7. Select Create a new Membership Directory, and then click Next.


  8. Select Membership Authentication for the authentication mode, and then click Next.


  9. Type Microsoft for the Directory Membership Name and type a password for the LDAP service, and then click Next.


  10. Select either Access Database or Microsoft SQL Database for the database type, and then click Next.

    NOTE: Because the database is only used for storing attributes and not actual user connections, using Microsoft Access is a stable and reliable solution.


  11. Fill in the database information for the type of database you chose in the previous step and then click Next.


  12. Verify that the IP address is set to All Unassigned (the default) and the Port for the local LDAP service is set to 389 (the default), and then click Next.


  13. Click Finish.


  14. Your ILS service should now be created and running, and you should be able to connect NetMeeting 2.0 clients to your ILS service.

Q224007 NetMeeting Does Not Connect to ILS Server
If a large number of users (for example, 500) will access the ILS, Microsoft recommends that you define additional Site Server settings to improve NetMeeting ILS performance.

To Adjust Site Server Settings for Maximum NetMeeting ILS Performance

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Site Server, point to Administration, and then click Site Server Service Admin (MMC).


  2. Expand Personalization and Membership.


  3. Expand the server.


  4. Expand Default Membership Service.


  5. Right-click LDAP, and then click Properties.


  6. On the General tab, click Unlimited (full access) for Max results set, type the number of Max connections based on the number of users accessing the server, and then click OK. (You can limit the number of connections to decrease server traffic and improve performance.)

    NOTE: If the number of users attempting to access the server exceeds the number of Max connections, NetMeeting displays the following error message:
    There was a problem connecting to the directory server. The server may be busy, or you may have mistyped the name. Please check the name or try again later.


  7. Click the Dynamic Directory tab to define these settings:

    • To accommodate the maximum number of users on the ILS, set the Maximum dynamic entries to a total of two entries per NetMeeting user (for example, for a maximum number of 10,000 NetMeeting users, change the number of entries to 20,000).


    • To provide additional time for the server to refresh before users are automatically logged off, increase the Minimum client time to live to a value of 10 minutes. NetMeeting automatically sends a refresh command to the server every five minutes, so adjust this setting only if you notice that users are being logged off unexpectedly.


    • If NetMeeting 1.0 users will access the ILS, select Enable NetMeeting 1.0 support.
