SYMPTOMS

When you use the Membership Directory Manager snap-in in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) to set the properties of a Membership directory, if the Logon using radio button has been selected and the user name and password have been entered, the following error occurs:

The system could not log you on using Username=<Administrator>. Try again.

CAUSE

The Membership directory is set up to use Membership authentication (rather than Windows NT authentication). This error occurs when a Windows NT account name and password are entered, instead of the Membership name and password.

RESOLUTION

Type the Membership administrator account name ("Administrator" by default) and password that were used when the Membership directory was created.
